Decorated Easter Eggs That Will Last (Forever)

Tired of tossing out those decorated hard-boiled eggs after Easter? Try these hollowed out eggs for decorating—they’re a game changer! Enjoy endless creativity knowing your designs will last for years, with no need to toss them because they have gone bad. It’s the best way to keep your Easter eggs as decorations for years to come!

Growing up, we always used hard-boiled eggs for Easter decorating, but they either ended up eaten or thrown away. One year, my grandma had us hollow out eggs, and we decorated them to make an “Easter Egg Tree.” Now, decades later, those eggs are still around, looking as fresh as ever.

Now, with kids of my own, I’ve found myself feeling the same disappointment when we have to discard our decorated eggs. Then, I remembered my grandma’s method. So, I hollowed out some eggs, keeping the insides for baking, and we decorated them with the kids. They were thrilled to have their own “carton of eggs” to decorate and save for the next year.

I highly recommend giving this egg decorating method a try with your own kids or grandkids! It’s sure to leave a lasting impression and provide decorations for years to come!

Supplies Needed

White Eggs
Straw
Bowls
Water / Dish Soap
Needle or similar

How to Make Decorated Eggs That Last

Carefully poke a hole in each end of the egg and move the needle around slightly to remove a small portion of the shell.

Once there is a hole in both ends, insert the needle into an end and start swirling it around to “scramble” the egg inside which will make it easy to remove from the shell.

Over a bowl, take a straw and place it over the smaller hole in the shell. Making sure the straw is held onto the eggshell, blow into the straw, which will force the egg through the larger hole on the other side of the egg and into the bowl below.

Once all eggs have been removed from the shell, place them in a bowl of hot soapy water for a few hours.

Remove the eggs and rinse them with water to remove the soap. Shake out any excess water and let them dry overnight. Decorate however you prefer.

When you start looking at what is in our food it just doesn’t make sense. Most homemade things cost less, taste better and are much healthier for you. For our grandparents generation and before making everything at home was the norm. We have become so disconnected from our food and how it’s made. Now it’s about convenience and quality ingredients take the back seat. I love seeing so many people being drawn back to making things from scratch.
Get your herbs and greens from the garden preserve Get your herbs and greens from the garden preserved and ready to use year round. Whether you just have a dehydrator or a freeze drier, both work perfectly to preserve your harvest.

Past years I have only dehydrated our herbs and they still come out amazing, full of flavor and color compared to store bought. This year we have a freeze drier so we are doing all of our greens in there to better preserve the flavor and nutrients.

Peel and separate the sections, place them on a tray lined with parchment and put into the freezer. Once frozen put them all into a freezer bag and save for later! Freezing them like this prevents them from freezing together in clumps.
